WEEK ENDING: March 27th, 2015

Fresh off their court victory against Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams over the megahit Blurred Lines, the family of the late Marvin Gaye are fighting. Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams have been ordered to pay up! A jury found that the 2013 megahit Blurred Lines written and performed by Thicke, Williams and Rapper T.I. was indeed too similar to 1977's Motown classic Got To Give It Up written and performed by Marvin Gaye. Thicke and Williams have been ordered to pay the estate of Marvin Gaye more than $7 million. Now, the Motown legend’s sisters Zeola and Jeanne Gay maintain they have been shutout of the compensation awarded to the family. Zeola says it’s particularly ironic because she is the first voice you hear on the song Got To Give It Up. Marvin Gaye, who also produced the record, left the party atmosphere and people’s voices in the song for effect. Plus, Zeola provides backing vocals on the rest of the recording. Marvin divorced his first wife Anna, who died last year, in the 70’s and then married Jan. Jan, Marvin’s ex-wife and mother of two of his three children, says the Gay sisters are desperate for money and do divisive things to her. Jan says Zeola has even accused her in a book of having affairs with Rick James and Teddy Pendergrass while still married to Marvin. The Gay sisters say Jan controls the estate and has final say, which why they don’t receive any money. Zeola took text messages to the press she claims she shared with Jan after the court ruling came down. The alleged texts show a definite riff in the family. The family still has a long way to go with the legal process too. The latest is they’ve included Rapper T.I., whose compensation wasn’t part of the first court victory, and the record labels in a second phase to permanently keep residuals and Gaye’s name on the Blurred Lines record. Pharrell Williams says he is appealing the earlier victory and that the jury ruled against him and Thicke out of emotion and not the law.

Sources say Satterthwaite was compensated for, among other things, medical and legal bills. This legal action between Satterthwaite and Jay-Z has been going through litigation since 2011. Satterthwaite contended Jay-Z had an affair with his mom Wanda in the 1990’s. But, is he really Jay Z’s son? Why won’t the rapper talk about it? He’s always quiet about the hidden children. Empire’s season just ended with a two-hour show season finale which millions of viewers (17 million of them) watched. The Lee Daniels-produced FOX drama featured guest stars Patti LaBelle and Jennifer Hudson, and finished first place in the ratings. Filming for season two will start in July. Will the upcoming season be longer than 12 episodes? FOX execs definitely want a longer season to cash in on Empire’s runaway hit status. I hear Director Spike Lee may come in to direct a few episodes. Plus, word is season two will show the days before the Lyons became successful. We’ll see “Lucious” (Terrence Howard) and “Cookie” (Taraji P. Henson) in their poor days, including before Cookie went to jail. But, before all that, should we expect to see this cast come Emmy night? Will the academy do the right thing and give the show props? Meanwhile, the Empire Soundtrack is the number 1 album in the country, even beating out Madonna for the top spot. When it’s time to redo contracts I hear that Taraji P. Henson could become the highest paid actress on TV. Her character “Cookie” is the backbone of the show. Leading Man Terrence Howard is very busy these days. In addition to Empire, Howard is going to be starring in a FOX miniseries Wayward Pines, where he plays a sheriff. It’s a mystery series that also stars Matt Dillon and premieres May 14th on FOX. Howard is also appearing in the Ken Burns documentary about cancer called Cancer: The Emperor Of All Maladies. Howard’s mom died of colon cancer at the age of 50. The documentary will air on PBS.

Meanwhile, the FOX network is headed to court to keep the name Empire as the title of the show. They are currently doing legal battle with Empire Distribution Inc., a California corporation, to keep the name.
