PATTY JACKSON'S 4-1-1
WEEK ENDING: September 19th, 2014

This has not been a good year for Singer Robin Thicke. Last year, he was on top of the world with his hit song Blurred Lines. Now everything is falling apart for him. Thicke lost his wife, Actress Paula Patton, and his latest CD was a commercial flop. Thicke is being sued by the family of Marvin Gaye because of that hit song Blurred Lines. They feel the song is a rip off of the Marvin Gaye's 1977 Motown classic Got To Give It Up. In a recent court deposition, Thicke came clean about the song. He admitted he didn’t write Blurred Lines, and that it was really written by Singer/Producer Pharrell Williams. Thicke says he took a writing credit for the song because he knew it would be a hit, and he was jealous that he didn’t actually write the song. It was someone else's idea. Thicke also admitted to being high on Vodka and vicodin all of last year. He says he would start everyday getting high. Thicke says he was even high when Oprah Winfrey interviewed him and he was with his son. Since he was under oath, Thicke felt he had to be honest even if it meant harming his career.

The music world lost a great musician last weekend. Pianist Joe Sample died at the age of 75. Sample was a founding member of the legendary jazz group The Crusaders. Among their signature songs The Way It Goes, Soul Shadows with Bill Withers, Pass The Plate and Street Life with Randy Crawford. Joe Sample also performed everything form solo works to backing Performers Lalah Hathaway, The Supremes, George Benson, Marvin Gaye and Miles Davis. I had a chance to meet Sample years ago when he performed at the Academy Of Music. I hosted a show he did with Take 6. He was so wonderful…such a nice man, who will be missed by so many around the world.

Hot new TV shows and stars for the latest issue of Essence magazine, and it's got everybody talking. That's because it features Alfre Woodward (State of Affairs),Danai Gurira (The Walking Dead), Nicole Beharie (Sleepy Hollow) and Laverne Cox (Orange Is The New Black). Cox is the first openly transsexual performer nominated for an Emmy.

The View returned with new ladies, great ratings and weight loss. The new season of the The View returned with Rosie O’Donnell, Rosie Perez and Nicolle Wallace joining Whoopi Goldberg. Goldberg remains as the show's moderator. Ratings were great as millions tuned in. The jury is still out on whether the ladies have real chemistry. O’Donnell returned with a bang that included a 50-pound weight loss. Goldberg also lost weight and is noticeably thinner. I think the true test with the show will unveil itself in the next few weeks. A republican was needed on the panel but I don’t think Wallace, a former George W. Bush staffer, appears strong enough. Wallace seems like she’s lost and trying to fit in. Perez is filling the Latina representation for the show, but she too is still finding herself. I like the ladies on the daytime talker The Real better. That show stars Loni Love, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Adrienne Bailon, Jeannie Mai and Tamar Braxton, and I think these young women have real chemistry. Plus, when they disagree it’s fun. Unfortunately, the ratings kickoff was not good for the first week. Hopefully, they will get better. The Real airs locally 11am on FOX 29. In other daytime news, Wendy Williams is back, and she returned to spectacular ratings.

Comedian/Actor Chris Rock is about to embark on another comedy tour. The Black Plague tour is kicking off in early 2015.

Anthony Anderson returns to TV next week in the new comedy Black-ish. Anderson teams up with Tracee Ellis Ross and Laurence Fishburne, who also co-executive produces with Anderson. Black-ish premieres Wednesday, September 24th at 9:30p right after Modern Family.

Jada Pinkett Smith plays the bad guy as the mobster boss in Gotham. The TV drama kicks off Monday, Sept. 22nd at 8pm on FOX.

Jody Watley is coming to Philly on Saturday, November 15th at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby along with Lillo Thomas.

Barbara Streisand is back.... with the fellas this time in a new CD called Partners. Streisand performs with Lionel Richie, Babyface, John Legend, the late Elvis Presley, Blake Shelton, her son Jason Gould and Stevie Wonder, just to name a few.

Oprah Winfrey is returning with a new season of Where Are They Now on her OWN cable network. October 5th features Raven Symone, October 12th features Vivica A. Fox and October 26th- The cast of the 90’s sitcom A Different World will reunite with their Producer/Director Debbie Allen and Oprah.

Is Usher looking to settle down with longtime girlfriend Grace Miguel? Usher is about to embark on a U.S. tour that is going to bring him to Philly on November 11th at the Wells Fargo Center and November 15th at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The Best Of Whitney Houston is a new Live CD that's coming out November 10th. Houston died two years ago, and the CD will honor her musical legacy. Music Legend Clive Davis, who guided Houston through her biggest career success, supervised the music selection by picking Houston's performances at the peak of her career. There will also be a DVD version of the tribute available as well.

Oscar Jamie Foxx returns to the big screen in the newest version of the movie musical Annie. The original movie came out in 1982, and was a Broadway sensation before that. Jay-Z and Will Smith are producing this version, which will also stars Oscar Nominee Quvenzhane Wallis as Annie. The movie opens in theatres December 19th.

Actor Michael Ealy has two big projects slated for 2015. First up is a thriller with Sanaa Lathan and Morris Chestnut called The Perfect Guy, and he has signed on for a movie based on the life of Civil Rights Activist Gilbert Mason.

More changes at Entertainment Tonight! Kevin Frazier is back as the new co-anchor along side Nancy O’Dell. Correspondent and Weekend Co-anchor Rocsi Diaz, formerly of BET’s 106 & Park is out, and Nischelle Turner, formerly of CNN, is in.

Beyonce and Jay-Z take over HBO Saturday night at 9pm when their On The Run tour airs. I hear they are also working on a joint album together, and there could be another “little Carter” on the way.

Halle Berry has signed on to be the producer of a new medical drama on CBS. No word yet on the fate of her own CBS summer drama Extant, which started strong but didn’t deliver the ratings that CBS had hoped for.

Congrats to the newest member of The Today Show. Sheinelle Jones left FOX 29's Good Day Philadelphia last spring, but now she is back to work as the new weekend news anchor for The Today Show. Jones starts on October 4th with Lester Holt and Erica Hill.

Congrats to Actors Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes on the birth of their baby girl.

When Shepherd ends her Broadway run, Real Housewives Of Atlanta Star NeNe Leakes will take her place. Leakes is no stranger to acting with her stints on Glee and The New Normal. It's another feather in the reality star's cap as she expands her public persona. Leakes will replace Sherri Shepherd and join Keke Palmer in Cinderella on November 25th.

Is a Musician planting stories to keep the media out of his personal life and get a little shine on his solo career at the same time? Is that what “friends” do when they're just friends?
